Chimney Liners- How do I choose ?
What Is A Chimney Liner, And Why Should I Consider Relining ? Chimney liners are flexible or rigid metal venting channels. Traditional masonry chimneys tend to break down and corrode over time. These liners are designed to maintain an insulated vent from the furnace, or appliances, through the chimney. The primary difference between chimney liners is the type of metal that they are constructed of; that is, as the grade of steel increases, so does the temperature rating, and usuability.
How Do I Determine My Fuel Type ? You will want to determine what fuels your heating appliance uses, and select a liner designed for use with that fuel. Typically furances will burn either gas, or wood, oil coal, or pellets.
Its not unusual for a home to use the chimney as a common vent for more than one appliance- so, its important to know what appliances vent into your chimney and choose a liner that will accomdate all combustible off gases.
An Important Safety Note!! Category III and IV appliances, like tankless water heaters require sealed combustion system, and cannot be vented into a common (shared) flue.
