Closed Loop vs. Open Loop
In a closed loop system another fluid (usually a glycol-water antifreeze mixture) is heated up by the solar collector. The storage tank has a heat exchanger that transfers the heat from the other fluid to the water for household use. In an open loop system the water would travel through the solar collector to be heated. The disadvantage of an open loop system is that if the weather drops below freezing then the pipes can burst from the water freezing.
Active Solar vs. Passive Solar
Active solar systems rely on external electrical or mechanical equipment (such as a pump) to assist in converting the solar energy for use. A passive solar system does not use external energy sources, it relies on the solar properties of the system to operate.
This is a closed loop glycol design. The system includes two collectors, a Solaraide HE tank with gas assist, a controller, a multi-speed pump, mixing valve, the glycol solution, and a thermal expansion tank (for the glycol loop).
The Heat Exchanger Tank
The tank is a Solaraide HE tank with gas assist. Perfect as a drop in replacement for current gas water heating system. The double wall heat exchanger is a copper tubing wrap around design. All water and collector loop connections are 3/4".
The collectors are a flat plate design with a black paint absorber coating. They are OG-100 certified by SRCC.
